3D wall art, 3D wall painting or 3D wallpaper: what's the difference?

Four things sold as “3D” for Indian walls, compared plainly: 3D wallpaper, printed 3D paintings, textured wall finishes and hand-sculpted 3D wall art.

Search for “3D wall art” or “3D wall painting” in India and you'll find four quite different things under the same words. They differ in what the “3D” actually is, how long they last and what they cost, so it's worth knowing which one you're looking at.

1. 3D wallpaper

Printed paper, vinyl or foam sheets that cover the whole wall. The depth is either printed (an illusion) or a shallow pressed pattern. It's quick to put up and usually the cheapest per square foot, but it's a pattern, not a piece, and in a damp wall it can lift or stain.

2. Printed “3D wall paintings”

Most listings called “3D wall painting” online are prints on canvas, sometimes with a little gloss or glitter on top. The picture is drawn to look deep, but the surface is flat to the touch. They're affordable and come in every subject; they don't change with the light the way a raised surface does.

3. Textured wall finishes

A painter applies textured paint or plaster directly to the wall: combed, stippled, marble-effect and so on. It's part of the house, covers a whole wall, and stays behind when you move.

4. Hand-sculpted 3D wall art

A separate artwork whose relief is physically built up by hand, in clay or modelling paste, on a panel or canvas. This is what we make. The forms rise off the surface, so side light draws real shadows that move through the day. It's made one piece at a time, which is why it costs more than a print, and it can be made in your colours or size, or designed around your wall.

Which one is right?

  • To cover a whole wall quickly on a small budget: wallpaper or a paint finish.
  • For a picture in any subject at a low price: a printed canvas.
  • For one piece that's the focal point of a room, that you can feel, and that you'll keep when you move: hand-sculpted relief.
  • For a very large or unusual wall: a commission, where a sample panel is approved before the full piece begins.

How to check what you're buying

Ask for, or look for, a photo of the piece from the side, and read the materials line. Built relief shows its edge and shadow; “canvas print”, “UV print” and “vinyl” mean the texture is printed.
