The artwork, not the wall finish
In India, “texture painting” also means a textured paint finish a painter applies to the wall itself. These are something else: separate artworks on stretched canvas, made in the studio, that you hang, move and take with you.
How a texture painting is made
- The canvas is primed, usually with gesso, so the relief grips it.
- The texture is built up by hand with palette knives and tools, in clay, modelling paste or both, sometimes in several layers.
- Each layer is left to cure hard before the next, which is most of the making time.
- It is painted in acrylic, detailed (some pieces in gold leaf or foil) and sealed.
- A few pieces use other techniques, such as plaster-draped fabric; each piece's materials line, taken from our records, says exactly what is used.
Canvas or panel?
Stretched canvas is lighter and has softly wrapped edges; a handcrafted MDF panel is rigid, which suits heavier relief. Both carry hand-sculpted texture. The relief pieces on MDF panels have their own page.
Choosing one
- Measure the wall first and compare it with the “Size on your wall” guide on most product pages.
- Texture shows most clearly with light from the side, such as a window beside the wall.
- Most pieces can be made in other colours or sizes; ask before you order.
