How a commission works, step by step
A custom commission from first message to delivery: your wall, the written design, the sample panel, approval, sculpting, final photos, packing and payments.
By the embossed.atelier studio · 27 Oct 2026
A commission is a piece designed for one wall and sculpted from scratch. It differs from a piece from the collection, which is an existing design made to order in its own size or a custom one. A commission starts from your wall instead: its size, its light, the colours of the room. This guide follows one from the first message to delivery, on the same terms that are printed on every commission confirmation.
The path at a glance
- Share your wall. Photos, measurements and the colours of the room, on WhatsApp.
- A design, in writing. The design, size, price and timeline, confirmed in writing. 15% books it.
- Sample panel. A small panel in the real texture and colours, in about 2–3 working days, shown to you on a video call and in photos.
- Your approval. The full piece begins only once you approve it. Not right? 90% of the booking is refunded.
- Sculpted by hand. Built up in layers in about 8–10 working days, with progress photos and videos.
- Final photos. A full photo and video set of the finished piece, before it's packed.
- Packed and crated. Packing and crating are included in the quoted price.
- Delivered. Charged separately and agreed in writing; usually 2–5 working days in transit.
Share your wall
Send us photos of the wall, its dimensions, your room colours and any references you like. The more we can see, the closer the first proposal lands. Everything happens on WhatsApp, so the photos and the conversation stay in one place.
A design, and everything in writing
We come back with a design made for that wall — composition, scale, palette and finish, considered against your room's light — and set it all out in writing: the design, exact size, finish, frame, price, payment stages and timeline. Nothing starts on a verbal understanding.
The payments follow the work: 15% to book and begin the sample panel, 35% once you approve the sample, and 50% before dispatch.
The sample panel
We sculpt a small panel in the agreed texture and colours so you can approve the real material before the full piece begins. We show you the sample panel on a video call and in photos. If you'd like it in your hands, we can deliver it to you, and that delivery is charged separately. It takes about 2–3 working days.
Approve it, or don't
If the sample panel isn't right, don't approve it: 90% of your booking amount is refunded, and the same applies if you cancel at any point before approving it. Once you approve the sample, the full piece begins and the commission can't be cancelled. The 10% kept covers the material already used on your panel.
This is the point of the sample: you see the real texture and colours before anything large is made.
Sculpting the full piece
The full piece is built up by hand, layer by layer, and we send progress photos and videos as it takes shape. The full piece takes about 8–10 working days from sample approval. Each piece is made by hand, so slight variation from the sample is part of the character of the work.
Final photos, then the last payment
A complete video and photo set of the finished piece, in daylight, from every angle — before it's packed. The closing payment falls due here, and dispatch moves the moment it clears.
Packing and delivery
Packing and crating are included in the quoted price; delivery is charged separately and agreed in writing before work begins. Depending on the piece and where it's going, a commission is delivered by our own team or by courier; which one is agreed in writing before work begins. Delivery usually takes about 2–5 working days. All told, a commission takes about two to three weeks from booking to your wall.
A commission is never returned or replaced once delivered. If it arrives damaged: Tell us on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery, with photos of the piece, the packaging, the shipping label and the damaged area, and we'll repair it.
How large a commission can be
Our largest commission so far is 6 ft × 3 ft, for a home in Noida. Large or small, the steps are the same, and the sample panel always comes first.
